DMB Stands Up to Weezer

David Jenison

The Dave Matthews Band did it again.

The jam-rock kings beat out nerd-rock kings Weezer to land the number one spot on Billboard's Top 200 album chart for the week ended Sunday.

DMB's Stand Up became the fifth different chart-topping debut in as many weeks by selling nearly 465,000 copies, per Nielsen SoundScan numbers released today.

Those sales numbers mark the biggest rock album debut since U2's How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb sold an explosive 840,000 copies last December.

Though its 1996 breakthrough disc Drive peaked at number two, all the DMB studio albums since--1998's Before These Crowded Streets, 2001's Everyday and 2002's Busted Stuff--opened in the top spot. In between band albums, Dave Matthews released his first solo album, 2003's Grammy-winning Some Devil, which sold 469,000 first-week copies at number two.

Of all the DMB discs, it's Everyday, featuring the hit "I Did It," that holds the band's single-week sales record with 732,000 copies sold.

It's rare to see two rock albums battle for the top slot in this era dominated by giant rap and pop albums, but that's what happened on the latest chart. Debuting at number two, Weezer's Make Believe celebrated a milestone in the band's history: It was released exactly 11 years to the day after Weezer's self-titled debut first hit retail. Of course, the new single "Beverly Hills" shows considerable growth since 1994's "Buddy Holly," "Undone (The Sweater Song)" and "Say It Ain't So." Make Believe sold 193,000 copies for the week.

Last week's number one, Nine Inch Nails' With Teeth, fell four spots to number five, moving 89,000 copies. Meanwhile Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi slipped from number two to number three spot in its fifth week with 172,000 copies.

The final Top 10 bow belonged to country music pretty boy Dierks Bentley, who wrangled up enough fans to open at six on 75,000 albums sold. The Phoenix-raised, Nashville transplant made his major label debut two years ago with a self-titled release.

The rest of the Top 10 were familiar faces: 50 Cent at four with The Massacre, "Hollaback Girl" Gwen Stefani at seven with Love, Angel, Music, Baby, Rob Thomas at eight with Something To Be, Houston rapper Mike Jones at nine with Who Is Mike Jones? and Bruce Springsteen holding down the 10 spot with Devils & Dust.

WWE superstar John Cena wrestled up a number 15 bow as his new disc, You Can't See Me, sold 43,000 copies. The Starting Line's Based on a Trust Story followed at 18, Robert Plant & the Strange Sensation's Mighty Rearranger opened at 22, Spoon's Gimmie Fiction scooped up number 44, while Styx's Big Bang sailed away with 46.

Team Sleep, the long-delayed side project by Deftones' singer Chino, debuted at 52 with a self-titled disc. More Radiohead than angry rock, Team Sleep features a host of guest appearances from groups like Pinback, Hella and Helium.

Other noteworthy debuts included Los Bandoleros' self-titled at 55, Lucinda William's Live @ the Fillmore at 66, Robert Earl Keen's What I Really Mean at 122, Bryan Adams' Room Service at 134 and Story of the Year's Live In the Lou/Bassassins at 138. Also making a minor chart splash was former American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis' band, Pray for the Soul of Betty. The group's self-titled disc opened at 129.

Meanwhile, over on the singles chart, R. Kelly is chasing after youngsters once again (rimshot, please!). American Idol's season four contestants continue to hold down the number one spot with "When You Tell Me That You Love Me," but Kelly's "In the Kitchen" is quickly gaining from the number two spot.

Next week, System of a Down will battle Toby Keith for chart supremacy--an ironic sales fight considering System's new anti-war single, "B.Y.O.B.," completely contrasts Keith's previous pro-bomb-dropping hit, "Courtesy of the Right, White, and Blue (The Angry American)."
