Green Day Leads VMA Field
07/25/2005 6:15 PM, E! Online Sarah Hall
Green Day's boulevard of broken dreams may soon be paved with
Moon Men statuettes.
The punk rockers led the field in
nominations for the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards Monday, scoring eight
nods in all, including Video of the Year, Best Group Video and Best Rock
Video for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," a song from the group's
Grammy-winning album, American Idiot.
Gwen Stefani
and Missy Elliott trailed just behind with six nominations apiece and U2
nabbed five nominations.
Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" will
square off against Green Day's "Boulevard," Coldplay's "Speed of Sound,"
Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and Snoop Dogg featuring Pharrell on "Drop It
Like It's Hot" in the Video of the Year category.
"Hollaback" was also nominated for Best Female Video, Best Female Video,
Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, while Stefani's video for "What
You Waiting For?" is up for Best Art Direction and Best Editing.
Meanwhile, Elliott's "Lose Control" racked up nominations for
Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Dance Video, Best Direction, Breakthrough
Video, Special Effects and Choreography.
U2's "Vertigo"
maintained its balance with multiple nominations, including Breakthrough
Video and Special Effects.
Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, the
Killers and My Chemical Romance were also heavily nominated, with each
receiving four nods in all.
P. Diddy is slated to host the
Miami awards ceremony on Aug. 28, which will feature an elaborate water
theme that MTV promised would outmatch any previous aquatic effects ever
produced for an awards show.
"One word--hot," the hip-hop
mogul told reporters Monday, as he whizzed into the Miami beachfront on
a jet pack. "It's hot out here, and it's going to be hot at the show."
P. Diddy promised a return to the shock value of the 2003
VMAs where Britney Spears and Madonna famously locked lips in the kiss
Googled 'round the world, as opposed to last year's relatively staid
ceremony, where appearances by the daughters of Senator John Kerry and
President George W. Bush were roundly booed.
"I'm going to
tell the artists that if you want to get naked and run across the stage,
go ahead and do it," P. Diddy said. "I'm not going to do teleprompter
reading and corny jokes."
While the rap impresario is okay
with nudity, he's prepared to reward the best-dressed attendees with
cold hard cash.
"I'm bringing a suitcase full of cash,"
Diddy said, adding that he'll award a $100,000 prize to the star whose
outfit most meets with his approval.
In deference to the
host's wishes, the traditional red carpet may be switched to white.
Some celebrities will arrive at the event aboard lavish
yachts, while others will make their entrance from tricked-out cars.
Kelly Clarkson, who scored two nominations and West, who
earned three, are slated to perform at the festivities at the
AmericanAirlines Arena, along with Green Day.
For the
first time, the ceremony will also feature original music composed by
Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and uber-producer Lil Jon. Fans will be able
to download the tunes as ring tones following the show.
