Hurricane Katrina's news coverage may have come and gone, but the
Hollywood benefits live on.
Grammy winners Wyclef Jean and
Norah Jones are the latest celebs to be hit with the charitable bug,
teaming up to record the single "Any Other Day" to benefit hurricane
relief efforts.
"As a child growing up in Haiti, I
experienced the wrath and destructive power of hurricanes," Jean said.
"And as an adult, going back, I have had the opportunity to serve in
hurricane relief efforts as well.
"My heart is filled with
tears for the victims and all those who have lost loved ones in
Hurricanes Katrina and RitaAll we can do now is band together the best
we can as one family and help everyone get back on their feet."
The tune's proceeds will be split between the American Red
Cross and AmeriCares for Gulf Coast Hurricane Relief. All publishing
royalties will also be donated to the nonprofit relief efforts.
"Any Other Day" will be available exclusively through MSN music
beginning Oct. 14.
But Jean and Jones aren't the only ones
contributing their musical talents to the cause. Prince released two
benefit tracks via his Website and iTunes Music Store; Coldplay also is
donating sales of its new single on iTunes.
Michael Jackson,
meanwhile, is currently in London "moving full speed ahead" on his new
all-star song, "From the Bottom of My Heart," to benefit Katrina
victims.
Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, R. Kelly, Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill, James Brown and Snoop Dogg are all expected to
contribute to Jackson's ballad. No word on when the single will be
released.
Among the other recent celeb-centric
hurricane relief efforts:
- Sharon Stone has teamed up with
fundraiser and songwriter Denise Rich to release the charity song and
video "Come Together Now." The Game, Joss Stone, Pattie LaBelle and
Celine Dion are among the songbirds contributing vocals to the track.
- Usher rounded up celeb friends Alicia Keys, T.I. and Young Jeezy for
Project Restart, a benefit concert for victims of Katrina and Rita,
which took place last Sunday in Atlanta. The R&B superstar also teamed
with Armani Exchange for limited edition T-shirts, with $25 from each
sale going to Project Restart.
- Lance Bass and A.J. Discala are
teaming up to host the uBid for Hurricane Relief celebrity auction,
where big-hearted (and walleted) bidders can purchase walk-on roles on
Scrubs and Arrested Devlopment or take a ski trip with
Justin Timberlake. Ashton Kutcher, Michael Vartan and Meg Ryan are among
the celebs donating goods and experiences to the auction, which begins
Saturday and runs through early November.
- Members of Sublime, No
Doubt's Tony Kanal and the Transplants' Tim Armstrong joining forces for
the Sublime Tribute Show in Los Angeles Oct. 24. The all-star
performances benefit the MusiCares Musicians' Assistance Porgram Fund
and the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund.
- Dashboard Confessional
raised more than $150,000 for hurricane relief during a three-concert
set last month. One hundred percent of ticket and merchandise sales from
the sold-out shows benefited Save the Children, Direct Relief
International and AmeriCares.
- Spike Lee is teaming up with HBO
films to produce and direct the documentary When the Levee Broke
to raise awareness of the plight of hurricane victims.
- NBC newsman
Brian Williams hosts an original documentary with never-before-seen
footage of the Gulf Coast devastation Oct. 27 on the Sundance Channel.
In His Own Words: Brian Williams on Hurricane Katrina will pay
tribute to the region and its victims.
- Adam Brody, Andrew Keegan
and Chris Pontius participated in the Rip Curl Malibu Pro Celebrity Surf
Bout earlier this month to raise awareness for the environmental
organization Heal the Bay. Keegan donated his $10,000 winnings to Surf
Zone Relief to benefit hurricane victims.
- Lisa Marie Presley is
staying actively involved with the MusiCares Hurricane Relief efforts,
donating time and money to personally distribute supplies to the Gulf
Coast.
- Supermodel Kathy Ireland made the super donation of 216,000
pounds of food and personal care items to hurricane victims, which she
personally delivered in Baton Rouge, Mobile, Alabama, and Tupelo,
Mississippi, earlier this month.
