Leonard Slatkin to lead Detroit Symphony

Leonard Slatkin has been named music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Slatkin's tenure begins next fall with the 2008-09 season, it was announced Monday. The orchestra says he is scheduled to lead the orchestra in concerts later this season.
Slatkin, who conducted in May, says he will lead five subscription weeks next season and half the concerts the following season.
He is completing 12 years as music director of the National Symphony in Washington. He also is principal guest conductor of London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Peter Oundjian will continue as principal guest conductor and artistic adviser this season. He will return next season as principal guest conductor.
