The world is full of pain and suffering and the last thing any of us need is a band that does not acknowledge this. I believe they are called "party bands" or "funny groups" --these bands that do things for guffaws and chuckles in direct contempt to the misery in which most of us are forced to dwell in endless toil. So, you can imagine my chagrin upon hearing and seeing that the new and fourth Cake album features songs such as "Meanwhile, Rick James...," "Arco Arena" (social commentary and appreciation for a corporate NBA arena) and "Commissioning a Symphony In C." Of course, the tunes are catchy like poison ivy and these guys are looking to have a good time. Pshaw! Their beats are vaguely Caribbean, meaning they celebrate a world where the weather is warm and makes you lazy. If you can forget your dreadful personal situation, you can tap your toe to this music. Jeez, doesn't anyone consult their "What Would Joy Division Do" bracelet anymore?
