Contrary to the lack of it on her previous hit, Alanis knows irony. The biggest pop singer in the world, working with a powerful producer and recording for Madonna's record label, has made an album as personal and emotionally troubled as that of a small-time indie-rock star. She's toned down the aggressive grooves and traded it for a subtle exotic groove, shying from pop hooks. She follows her generation into eastern religion ("Baba") only to discover a sales pitch worthy of a car salesman. The people who led her on the path of success are met with mixed blessings ("UR"). The album's title is either an admission of ego or the proud announcement of the album's--well, ironic--concept. Every song has either a front and center "I" or an accusatory "you." "I am the biggest hypocrite." "Are you still mad I kicked you out of bed?" "You from New York you are so relevant." So, should you care? Depends. I always liked her for the pop hooks. You may think differently.
