Moody guys on guitars strumming about the lack of hope in the world never go out of style. You'd think that years of being passed over by beautiful women, not being invited to parties and having "dork boy" scribbled on your history books would lead toàwell, Fred Durst. But for no particular scientific reason, some people hide behind their guitar and piano and begin pouring their heart out.

Coldplay is one of those British bands that forms, makes a record, and receives tons of critical praise and "next big thing" status within its first 18 months of existence. All that's left to do is deliver on the promise. Their debut album does exactly that. With melodies that often sound familiar and a suicidal tenderness all their own, Coldplay are bound to make the University College of London proud, much in the same way the Talking Heads have been in the alumni literature for the Rhode Island School of Design for years. Who knows, maybe these guys will go back and graduate? Who knows? Maybe they already have.
