The Legendary Dean Martin Review

07/13/2005 6:32 AM, AMG

There's nothing wrong with these 20 recordings of Dean Martin, probably singing on the Martin and Lewis radio show of the late '40s and early '50s. The sound on this British compilation is fine, the accompaniment by Dick Stabile's orchestra is sympathetic, and there are performances of songs Martin never cut for Capitol Records. The only problem is the almost complete lack of annotations. When exactly were the tracks recorded? Who is that duetting with Martin on "Baby, It's Cold Outside"? And, despite the credit, that's not the Johnny Mercer song "Dream," it's a different song apparently called "I'd Rather Be a Dreamer With a Penny." Martin deserves better treatment, and so does the consumer. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
