Quincy Jones's Finest Hour Review

It has been questioned whether Quincy Jones will best be remembered as a producer of pop hits (Thriller) or for his massive jazz output. After an unsuccessful early attempt as a jazz trumpeter, Jones focused on the challenges of his main interest, arranging and conducting. As part of the Finest Hour series from Verve, 15 of Jones arrangements from 1956 through 1981 have been collected spotlighting his work with vocalists Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington and top-notch orchestras including Harry "Sweets" Edison, Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Phil Woods, and Roland Kirk. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
