You Want This Review

You Want This was the sixth single from Janet Jackson's janet. album and, like its predecessors, became a Top Ten hit. The song is lighter-than-air classic Janet Jackson bubblegum material, but with a wealth of remixes and a non-LP bonus track, the well-marketed single, as with its predecessors, proved quite enticing for Janet's fans. The first track is the single remix, which consists of the album version with a new rap by MC Lyte slapped onto it in order to differentiate it from the original. The rap is fun (and references "Any Time Any Place," which was the previous hit), and certainly adds extra punch to the song. The second track is an LP edit that fades out a little too early, omitting the song's playful xylophone ending. The third mix is a decent "dancehall" styling of the song, and the final mix of "You Want This," the "Spoiled Milk Remix," is a hip-hop version that sounds as though the beat doesn't quite fit with the song. In essence, the best version here is the track featuring MC Lyte -- the others are forgettable. The single also includes two other tracks. The first is "New Agenda," one of the stronger and more aggressive songs from janet., featuring a rap courtesy of Chuck D (but doesn't reference her sexuality, which was the album's overall theme). The final track is the non-LP "70s Love Groove," which capitalized on the early-'90s American nostalgia for all things '70s. The song is a slice of smoldering, slow-burning quiet storm, full of Janet coos, sexual come-ons, and orgasmic breathing. Not bad, and, as is the case with her singles, a well put together package for fans, but definitely not one of her most compelling sets. ~ Jose Promis, All Music Guide
