Frizzle Fry (Remastered/Bonus Tracks) Review
07/13/2005 7:02 AM, AMG
Primus' eccentric, dissonant blend of avant-rock, funk, punk, and thrash has inspired comparisons to everyone from Frank Zappa to Devo to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. But whatever comparison is made, the fact is that this trio has created strikingly original music. Frizzle Fry is sometimes a bit too self-indulgent for its own good, but in general, Les Claypool's willingness to experiment and his risk-taking nature come through the most. "Too Many Puppies," "To Defy the Laws of Tradition," and "Mr. Knowitall" are among the nutty, weird treasures that helped establish Primus as alternative rock heroes and make Frizzle Fry the classic that it is. [The 2002 Prawn Song reissue adds a medley of the Residents' "Hello Skinny" and "Constantinople" as a bonus track.]~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
