2013 MuchMusic Video Awards: Behind-the-scenes round up

This year’s MuchMusic Video Awards were filled with fun performances, awkward moments and show-stopping fashion. However, there are some things that you may have missed behind-the-scenes.

Ed Sheeran declared his love for Avril Lavigne
English singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran got into the Canadian spirit by donning a Toronto Blue Jays t-shirt at the MMVAs. In the media room, he revealed to Yahoo! Canada Music that Avril Lavigne is his favourite artist from the Great White North.

“I grew up with the [‘Let Go’] record,” he said. “She was someone who both boys and girls liked and that’s a very rare thing for a lot of acts. She’s great. She’s really good [and] Drake. Drake’s obviously great. I love Drake.”

Billy Talent called out Marianas Trench on the best red carpet entrance
Marianas Trench made a splash (literally) on the MMVAs red carpet by showing up dressed as mermen on the back of a truck.

However, even though the Vancouver band has been known for some memorable entrances, Toronto rockers Billy Talent seem to believe that they have the grandest entrance of all time: Arriving at the 2005 MMVAs in a tank.

“Nobody can beat the tank,” the band told reporters. “You are done, Marianas Trench. [We] honestly can’t see how can a form of transport beat that unless it’s an aircraft carrier.”

When Marianas Trench entered the media room, the group fired back, noting that they had Billy Talent beat way back in 2007.

“First of all, a war insinuates that there’s a competing side and there is not,” they told the press. “They came in a tank one time and we’ve done [five] amazing entrances … We beat them four years ago.”

Serena Ryder admitted why she loves being 30-years-old
Serena Ryder rocked the MMVAs performing a combination of her new single “What I Wouldn’t Do” and her smash hit “Stompa.”

It’s hard to believe that later this year the songstress will turn 31 years old, but it seems like being in her 30s has given Ryder a new sense confidence.

“I feel like life is getting easier as the years go by,” she revealed to Yahoo! Canada Music. “It’s a little bit less complex. Life’s always been pretty complex but I like being in my 30s because I feel like I’m in charge of myself a little bit more than last year.”

Avril Lavigne shared how she’s handling a new album and planning a wedding at the same time
Asked by reporters about planning her wedding to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger while in the MMVA media room, Avril Lavigne said, “It’s been a lot of fun.”

She continued, “There’s always lots going on and I’m really busy releasing new music and promoting this album and also talking about my wedding a lot … I’m multi-tasking but it’s very exciting. I’m very excited about it. I can’t really say too much. I’m trying to say as much as I can without saying too much.”

PSY explained how he prepared for his hosting duties
It sounds like PSY put in a lot of prep work prior to taking the MMVA stage as co-host.

“I was really nervous because English is not my mother tongue,” he admitted to reporters after the show. “I practiced hard and I kind of cheated because I pre-scripted it and I memorized it.”
