2013 MuchMusic Video Awards: The most awkward moments

This year’s MuchMusic Video Awards were fun to watch and featured some great performances. However, like any awards show, they also featured several awkward moments. Check out a few of our favourites below.

Watch the 2013 MMVAs here.

A MuchMusic VJ is seemingly star struck by Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger on the red carpet
Avril Lavigne was one of the last celebrities to make her entrance on the MMVA red carpet, and she did so with her rocker fiancé Chad Kroger in tow. However, when the couple arrived, MuchMusic VJ T-reXx seemed to lose himself in the moment a little upon meeting his “crush.”

“No disrespect, but for years I’ve had a crush on Avril and I’ve probably watched you win all seven of [your] MMVAs so, welcome and it’s a pleasure to meet you,” T-reXx said when Lavigne and Kroeger appeared on the red carpet. “Now, from your current love story, does that influence the songs on your next album?”

Lavigne responded: “Well, we got together to write and there’s some love songs, but it’s a record full of all sorts of different subjects and we wrote a ton of them together but I wrote a lot with new people on this record so it’s fresh energy [and] it’s coming out this September.”

Demi Lovato wins International Video of the Year – Artist
Was it just us, or did Demi Lovato seem a little bewildered after winning International Video of the Year – Artist for “Heart Attack” at last night’s MMVAs?

“It’s so awesome, this is amazing,” she said when she reached the microphone. “It’s so heavy. It’s so heavy. This is amazing … I’m going to put it on [my] bookshelf because this is amazing. Thank you guys so much, this is so incredible! I owe everything to my fans. My Lovatics, you’re everything to me, I love you so much, thank you!”

Shawn Desman and Anjulie remind viewers to vote for the Your Fave categories
When it came time for a friendly reminder that viewers could still vote for "Your Fave International Artist or Group," it felt like Shawn Desman’s script was a little unbelievable.

“We actually lined up across the block for days to get these wristbands right here,” Desman said to MuchMusic VJ Lauren Toyota during the broadcast. To which Toyota responded, “What? You’re Shawn Desman and Anjulie! Celebrities don’t have to line up for days to get in.”

Desman replied: “I’m sorry -- after nine years you’re just telling me this now?”

Really? In the past, Desman has presented at the MMVAs and won Video of the Year with “Electric/Night Like This.” We highly doubt he’s ever had to line up for a wristband.

The Janoskians strip down to their underwear while presenting an award
YouTube troupe
The Janoskians presented International Video of the Year by a Canadian and due to a supposedly malfunctioning t-shirt launcher, they were forced to take off their own t-shirts and give them away to the crowd. At least one of the group members is 17 years old -- isn’t that a little young to be disrobing during an awards show?

At least Britney Spears was 19-years-old during her “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” 2000 MTV Video Music Awards stripping performance.

A VJ realizes a “Revenge” star isn’t actually there for revenge
Josh Bowman, who plays Daniel Grayson on the ABC series “Revenge,” was a presenter at this year’s MMVAs. While giving away the award for Viral Video of the Year, MuchMusic VJ Scott Willats made an obvious pun, saying, “I’m a little nervous, I heard that you’re here for ‘Revenge.”

Bowman responded: “I’m not here for revenge, I’m here from ‘Revenge.’ You know, ‘Revenge’ the TV show?”

Austin Mahone misunderstands the meaning of “going Dutch”
Pun alert! While introducing show performer Armin van Buuren, singer Austin Mahone asked the audience if anyone felt like “going Dutch.” However, the teen heartthrob was referring to Buuren’s nationality, not the phrase’s literal meaning.

There was also that awkward camera shot of former soulDecision lead singer Trevor Guthrie getting ready for his performance of "This Is What It Feels Like" with Buuren. (Skip to the 0:18 minute mark in the below clip to see Guthrie waiting for his cue.)
