2013 MuchMusic Video Awards: Our Predictions

The 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards are set to take over Toronto on Sunday for the party of the year. While impatiently wait for the show to start, let’s check out which artists we think will walk away with some of the night’s biggest awards.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR
Nominees:
Classified f. David Myles “Inner Ninja,” Drake “Started From the Bottom,” Marianas Trench “Desperate Measures,” Serena Ryder “Stompa,” The Weeknd “Wicked Games”

Who should win: Serena Ryder “Stompa”
Serena Ryder’s “Stompa” stood out to us because of its simplistic set and powerful message for young girls. “The concept [of the video] is all about how if you separate yourself into just one element, earth, air, fire or water, you won’t succeed,” Ryder said in a behind-the-scenes clip of the making of “Stompa.” “You’ll succeed if you bring in all of the elements together into one thing … [the little girl in the video] represented harmony.”

Who will win: Drake “Started From the Bottom”

This music video is hilarious, quirky and fun to watch. Our favourite parts of the clip are the scenes where Drake is shown working at Shoppers Drug Mart and as it turns out, the company enjoyed it as well:

POP VIDEO OF THE YEAR
Nominees:
Down With Webster “One In A Million,” Hedley “Kiss You Inside Out,” Kardinal Offishall f. Karl Wolf “Turn It Up,” Marianas Trench “Desperate Measures,” Shawn Desman “Too Young To Care”

Who should win: Marianas Trench “Desperate Measures”
As the third music video to stem from Marianas Trench’s certified platinum album “Ever After,” “Desperate Measures” picks up where “Fallout” (last year’s MMVA winner for Cinematography of the Year) left off.

Who will win: Marianas Trench “Desperate Measures”
Last year, Marianas Trench lost out to Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” in this category, and we think that MuchMusic will recognize their talent for spoofing films and acting like dolls this time around.

INTERNATIONAL VIDEO OF THE YEAR – GROUP
Nominees:
fun. “Some Nights,” Jay-Z and Kanye West f. Frank Ocean and The-Dream “No Church In The Wild,” Imagine Dragons “Radioactive,” Jonas Brothers “Pom Poms,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis f. Wanz “Thrift Shop,” Maroon 5 f. Wiz Khalifa “Payphone,” Mumford & Sons “I Will Wait,” One Direction “Kiss You,” Swedish House Mafia “Don’t You Worry Child,” The Lumineers “Stubborn Love”

Who should win: Imagine Dragons “Radioactive”
This music video by Imagine Dragons features an underground puppet-fighting ring and an adorable pink teddy bear that triumphs over the ringleader played by Lou Diamond Phillips. Need we say more?

Who will win: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis f. Wanz “Thrift Shop”
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis hit it big this past year with “Thrift Shop” and it wouldn’t surprise us if this honour went to them. After all, who else can rock your grandpa's style?

INTERNATIONAL VIDEO OF THE YEAR BY A CANADIAN
Nominees:
Avril Lavigne “Here's to Never Growing Up,” Carly Rae Jepsen “This Kiss,” Justin Bieber f. Big Sean “As Long As You Love Me,” Tegan and Sara “Closer,” Walk of the Earth “Red Hands”

Who should win: Avril Lavigne “Here's to Never Growing Up”
Avril Lavigne came back strong this year with a blast from the past in the shape of her new music video for “Here’s to Never Growing Up.” She use to be the darling of the MMVAs and we think that she should return this year with a win.

Who will win: Justin Bieber f. Big Sean “As Long As You Love Me”
Last year, Avril Lavigne’s “Smile” faced off against Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” and lost to the teen heartthrob. We fear that this year will be no different.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR – ARTIST
Nominees:
Demi Lovato “Heart Attack,” Ed Sheeran “Give Me Love,” Justin Timberlake “Mirrors,” Nicki Minaj “Va Va Voom,” Phillip Phillips “Home,” P!NK “Try,” PSY “Gangnam Style,” Rihanna “Diamonds,” Taylor Swift “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” will.i.am f. Britney Spears “Scream & Shout”

Who should win: Justin Timberlake “Mirrors”
It’s not hard to get emotional while watching Justin Timberlake’s music video “Mirrors.” The clip was dedicated to his grandparents William and Sadie after his grandfather passed away last year.

Who will win: PSY “Gangnam Style”
It’s hard to argue with the most watched music video of 2012.

YOUR FAVE ARTIST OR GROUP (Fan-voted category)
Nominees: Carly Rae Jepsen, deadmau5, Drake, Justin Bieber, Marianas Trench

Who should win: Every single one of these musicians deserves this award because they are all proud to be Canadian and they are all of our favourites!

Who will win: Justin Bieber
It’s hard to go up against Justin Bieber’s Beliebers. His Twitter following alone is over 40 million strong.

YOUR FAVE VIDEO (Fan-voted category)
Nominees:
Billy Talent “Surprise Surprise,” Classified f. David Myles “Inner Ninja,” Drake “Started From The Bottom,” Hedley “Kiss You Inside Out,” Marianas Trench “Stutter”

Who should win: Marianas Trench “Stutter”
Marianas Trench and their crew look like they had a ball making the music video for “Stutter.” The clip parodies the Steven Spielberg film “1941” and the band learned how to swing dance for the occasion.

Who will win: Drake “Started From The Bottom”
We think that the Toronto highlights in Drake’s video “Started From The Bottom” will resonate with Canadian fans and in turn, they will vote for him. After all, don’t you wish confetti fell from the sky while you were shopping at Shoppers Drug Mart?
