Alanis Morissette covers Green Day’s “Basket Case” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”

During her appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" promoting her new album "Havoc and Bright Lights," Canadian songstress Alanis Morissette paid tribute to Green Day by delivering a stripped down rendition of their 1994 punk rock hit, "Basket Case."

The Ottawa-native filled in for the rock band on Tuesday's show after they were forced to cancel a few upcoming appearances following lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong's public meltdown onstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Sept. 21.

Morissette performed the "Dookie" album track with an element of gentle vulnerability that took the tune to another level, completely flipped it on its head and dialed down the in-your-face punch of the original while morphing it into a solemn song that sounded like a cry for help.

Fans seem to approve of the cover and have left comments on the video like, "One of my favourite singers sings one of my favourite songs! I love this cover. Thank you, Alanis."

Wrote another: "Wow... people who listen to this will finally realize that Green Day has a much deeper meaning.. that was perfect. So perfect. I'm going to show this to all the old people that hate Green Day I know."

At the end of her performance, the 38-year-old also gave a hat tip to Armstrong, who is said to be entering rehab, saying, "We love you, Billie Joe."

"Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse," the band wrote in a statement on their website after Armstrong's rant, which included smashing instruments and profanity after their segment was allegedly shortened by 20 minutes due to Usher's set running over time.

They also wrote, "We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances."
