Alanis Morissette performs ‘Semicolon’ with The Lonely Island

It seems like Alanis Morissette is always teaching us something.

The Canadian singer/songwriter joined The Lonely Island during their June 6 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and midway through their tune “Semicolon,” she stopped the band to correct them on their grammar skills.

“These are actually not examples of semicolons,” she said in reference to the track’s lyrics. “Most of them are colons. So, technically, grammatically incorrect.”

The pause in the song was used as a segue into Morissette singing her smash hit “Ironic,” which has frequently been mocked for misusing the term "ironic." As Morissette sang, Lonely Island members Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) danced onstage.

Morissette also tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo of her time with The Lonely Island:

To us, Morissette's voice sounded better than ever on the “Jagged Little Pill” album track. Unfortunately, it seems like the YouTube community thinks that her presence on "Semicolon" didn't work as well as the original featured artist, Solange.

“I liked it,” one viewer commented. “Yeah her voice wasn't as good of a fit as solange's, but it worked and it was funny.”

Wrote another: “Her voice didnt fit the song at all, the girl from the original song was much better.”

Even though some viewers thought she didn’t belong, there are still plenty of fans rallying behind Morissette, leaving notes like, “Of course. It doesn't fit Alanis' voice. It wasn't written with her in mind. She has a unique sound that fits her music which is why her song after she corrects them sounds better as that is what she usually sings.”
