Brandy enters Billboard chart’s top 10 for the first time in 10 years with “Put It Down”

Jumping six spots from eleventh position, Brandy's tune "Put It Down" recently hit number five on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week making it the first time the 33-year-old has had a track in the top 10 in the past 10 years.

The last time we saw Brandy take top 10 status was back in 2002 with her song "What About Us?" from her album "Full Moon," which spent 20 weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart peaking at number three and making it to No. 7 on the Hot 100.

"Put It Down," which also features a guest appearance by Chris Brown, is the first single off the soul singer's upcoming album "Two Eleven," due out October 12.

"I think the fans have been very patient with me, but I just wanted to make sure that this album was right -- the right type of music, the right core," Brandy said in an interview with Billboard. "I feel like we're getting to that point where I felt comfortable with putting something out."

"Two Eleven," named in reference to her birth date and the day her mentor and friend Whitney Houston passed away, is the singer's first album since 2008's "Human" and a record that Chameleon Records CEO Breyon Prescott hopes will rejuvenate R&B music.

"I saw music going someplace else," Prescott said. "I was like, the only way Brandy should come back is bringing R&B music back. I see everyone doing dance music, and I was like, we can't do this. We gotta stick to the core, which is R&B. I got to bring you back to 2012 with hard beats, but the melodies are soft, and the content of the songs are going to be Brandy."

Featuring collaborations with artists like Monica on the track "It All Belongs To Me," in addition to her first single featuring Brown, the "Have You Ever?" hitmaker describes her new sound on "Two Eleven" as a departure from the past.

"I'm reinventing myself and I feel fearless," she said. "I haven't done R&B in a very long time. This album is rooted in R&B. The sound is different, it's about love. It's mature, it's gritty, it's edgy."

As her follow up to "Put It Down," Brandy has also released the audio to her new song "Wildest Dreams," which you can listen to by heading here.
