Carly Rae Jepsen’s album “Kiss” debuts to mixed reviews

Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.

After the massive success of her viral hit "Call Me Maybe," thanks in no small part to the likes of Justin Bieber, fans and critics eagerly awaited the release of Carly Rae Jepsen's new album "Kiss" and yesterday it dropped to some very mixed and somewhat disappointing reviews.

Some media outlets enjoyed the album, such as the Toronto Star, who gave the album a 3/4 star rating, and The Los Angeles Times, who called it a "strong new album" that "feels like a successful attempt to invest pheromone-rush dance pop with a bit of old-soul wisdom," but other reviewers didn't share the same love and were not as kind.

"'Kiss' too often defaults to mediocre dance pop like the Owl City collaboration 'Good Time,'" wrote Rolling Stone, giving the album a 2.5/5 star rating. "[It's] heavy on Disney-fied thump [and] light on memorable hooks that might highlight her unassuming adorableness."

"So how, exactly, do you follow such a wonder [like 'Call Me Maybe?'] By repeating it 10 times in a row, it seems," the New York Daily News reported, giving "Kiss" a 2/5 star rating and calling it "this year's most redundant disc."

Referring to certain songs on the album like "Turn Me Up" and "Tonight I'm Getting Over You" calling them "duds," The Associated Press writes, "They're both boring ditties about getting over someone by hitting the town. Light toe tapping may ensue, but these are forgettable tracks."

Finally, the BBC sums up the record as, "Chaste and tailor-made for anyone who finds Rihanna too ripe, Lady Gaga too weird and Katy Perry too all-over-the-place," which we take to mean that "Kiss" has none of the qualities that makes artists like those previously mentioned unique risk takers who are full of variety.

However, is "Kiss" a good album that was just amplified too much leading up to its release? Or, was "Call Me Maybe" such a big hit that no album, no matter how great, could even come close to matching or surpassing the success of the official song of the summer?
