Carrie Underwood honours Oklahoma tornado victims with moving CMT Music Awards performance

At this year’s CMT Music Awards, Carrie Underwood paid tribute to her home state of Oklahoma and its tornado victims with a special performance of her new single “See You Again.”

Wearing a pale pink dress, the 30-year-old singer gave a touching rendition of her “Blown Away” album track. Behind her, pictures were displayed of the damage caused by the three kilometre-wide tornado that swept through Oklahoma on May 20 .

Near the end of the song, Underwood made her way downstage to join Nashville's Christ Church Choir, who were all dressed in white. After the show, she expressed her gratitude to the choir for accompanying her during such a meaningful performance on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time the Season 4 “American Idol” winner has honoured Oklahoma. Underwood also donated $1 million to the Red Cross’ tornado relief efforts.

"The people in Oklahoma are really great," she told The Associated Press. "Tornado season is something that we're all used to but you can never fully prepare for it. It takes what it wants and it knocks down what it wants and there's nothing you can do about it except just try to be prepared. They're just wonderful people and they're going to rebuild and they're going to bounce back stronger than ever."

Along with giving viewers goose bumps with her moving musical performance dedicated to the tornado victims, the songstress also took home one of the evening’s most coveted trophies as she won Video of the Year with her clip “Blown Away.”

"Whew, the good Lord has been very good to me -- well, all of us in this room, for a long time," she said. "First and foremost, I'd like to just thank Him for our love of music."

Next up, we’ll see Underwood in Julie Andrews’ role as Maria von Trapp in the three-hour presentation of “The Sound of Music” live on NBC on December 5.

"People are so crazy auto-tuned, and there's so much on TV that isn't wholesome,” she told Marie Claire about the gig. “This seemed to be the best of all worlds."

The singer also recently gave “Good Morning America” a first look at her new music video for “See You Again,” which you can check out here.
