David Bowie exhibit coming to Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario this fall

After being on display at the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum in London, England, the exhibition “David Bowie is” will set up shop in the Great White North at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario from Sept. 25 to Nov. 27.

Announced on June 11 by the AGO, gallery director and CEO Matthew Teitelbaum called the event “an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate a living artist whose radical artfulness of identity has had an enormous influence on art, design and contemporary culture as we know it.”

He added, “We are thrilled to work with the world-class V&A in bringing the provocative genius and vision of David Bowie to Toronto.”

Over 300 pieces of Bowie memorabilia will make their way to Toronto this September, including items like costumes, set designs, photographs, music videos, instruments, album art and more. (We are looking forward to seeing the Ziggy Stardust bodysuits the most!)

After its run at the AGO, the exhibit will travel to the Sao Paulo Museum of Image and Sound in Brazil, where it will be open to fans from Jan. 28 to Apr. 21, 2014.

Soon after the announcement was made about the exhibit’s Toronto debut, fans began sharing their excitement on Bowie’s Facebook page, leaving comments like, “OMG!!!!!!! Seriously?! I was so bummed I couldn't afford to go to England to see this. Now it's coming to my area! I could cry with happiness!”

Wrote another: “I am so jazzed it's coming to the beautiful AGO in Toronto - saw it in London, will see it 10 times in TO.”

According to CBC News, “David Bowie is” was curated by the V&A Museum, and pieces were chosen from the David Bowie Archive, a collection of over 75,000 items that are all taken care of by the musician himself.
