Sound CheckDemi Lovato speaks out following father’s death
Patrick Lovato, Demi Lovato’s biological father, passed away over the weekend. Soon after the news broke, the singer was flooded with messages of love from her fans.
According to E! News, sources say that the 20-year-old artist’s father had been fighting cancer and that the two have been estranged for a long time. The songstress’s older sister, Dallas Lovato, was one of the first to comment on the subject:

“The X Factor” host Mario Lopez also tweeted his words of support for Lovato after she missed an event for the reality television singing competition program over the weekend. In addition, the show's creator and fellow judge Simon Cowell reached out to the singer, tweeting:

On June 23, Lovato shared her feelings of gratitude for the outpour of love, writing:

Along with former The Academy Is singer William Beckett, Lovato wrote a song in 2009 about her relationship with her dad called “For The Love of a Daughter.” However, the track did not make her album “Here We Go Again” and was instead released on her 2011 record “Unbroken":
“There's one song in particular, ‘For the Love of a Daughter,’ about my relationship with my birth father,” she told the New York Daily News in 2009, later adding in the interview that the two were still estranged.
“The last time I talked to him was two years ago,” she explained. “You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do … I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much. Writing about that subject on the album will probably surprise some people.”
The tune features lyrics like, “It's been five years since we've spoken last / And you can't take back / What we never had / Oh, I can be manipulated / Only so many times / Before even ‘I love you’ / Starts to sound like a lie.”
In 2010, Mr. Lovato spoke to Inside Edition about his daughter, saying, “I love my little girl so much … She always told me, 'I'm going to be a star, Daddy' … I want my little girl to be happy."
The singer was recently in Toronto on June 16 to perform at the MuchMusic Video Awards. She also accepted the award for International Video Of The Year for her clip “Heart Attack.”
