Juno Awards Nominations 2013: Snubs and surprises

While artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber lead this year’s Juno Awards nominations, musicians like Alanis Morissette, Neil Young and Our Lady Peace were left out in the cold.

Morissette’s “Havoc and Bright Lights,” which features singles such as “Guardian” and “Receive,” peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s 200-album chart last year and showcased the songstress’ return to music after having her first child with husband Mario 'Souleye' Treadway.

The last time Morissette won a Juno Award was 2009’s Pop Album of the Year for “Flavors of Entanglement;” she has been nominated 23 times with a total of 13 wins.

Another artist that the Junos seem to have forgotten is the 2011 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award winner Neil Young, who released both “Americana” and “Psychedelic Pill” in 2012.

The legendary musician collaborated with American rock band Crazy Horse on both records, received high ratings from Rolling Stone for each album, yet did not score a single mention in a single category this year.

Between 1995 and 2006, Toronto rock band Our Lady Peace earned a total of 25 nominations and four wins at the Junos; our hopes were high that they would be recognized for their eighth studio album “Curve,” but unfortunately they did not receive a nomination.

However, not all the news was upsetting today as Abbotsford, B.C. artist Victoria Duffield became a first time nominee, receiving a nod in the category of Pop Album Of The Year for “Shut Up and Dance,” a record that she had a hand in writing.

"It's a true achievement especially because I co-wrote all of the songs on the album," she told Yahoo! Canada Music in August. "It really feels like I have a part of me out there now for people to listen to and my fans to absorb and get to know me better by listening to it. I had never anticipated co-writing all of the tracks on my album because I never saw myself as a songwriter growing up so I didn't think that I would be able to."

While it seems that anyone could have predicted that Jepsen and Bieber would both score mentions in major categories like Album Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, Pop Album Of The Year and the Juno Fan Choice Award, another act has risen to the challenge and has something in common with both artists.

Pop/punk band Marianas Trench was also nominated for Fan Choice and Album of the Year categories and managed to pick up a nomination for Group of the Year.

Three nominations is a big change for the band who were nominated last year for Pop Album of the Year for “Ever After,” but lost to Hedley’s “Storms.”

The band’s lead singer Josh Ramsay was also nominated for the Jack Richardson Producer Of The Year award for his work on Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” and Marianas Trench’s “Fallout.”

The band and the “Call Me Maybe” hitmaker were also announced as performers for this year’s show along with Billy Talent and host Michael Bublé.

(In case you were wondering, Marianas Trench, Bieber and Jepsen all performed at The 100th Grey Cup halftime show.)

More music we feel should have been noticed at this year’s Juno Awards includes albums like “The Sticks” by Mother Mother, David Usher’s "Songs from the Last Day on Earth" and Diamond Rings’ “Free Dimensional.”

The Juno Awards airs on Sunday, April 21, 2013.
