Even though Toronto rapper Drake came up empty handed at this year's American Music Awards, Canucks such Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen walked away with top honours.

In light of his high-profile split from singer/actress Selena Gomez, Bieber showed up on the 2012 AMAs red carpet with his mother Pattie Mallette after he asked her to be his date on Twitter.

As for Jepsen, she stunned on the red carpet wearing a low-cut, floor length, sparkling Gomez Gracia dress and was the first Canadian act to take the stage performing her songs "This Kiss" and "Call Me Maybe" in front of three colourful telephone booths.

In addition to her sweet performance, the 26-year-old also took home one of the evening's most coveted awards, New Artist of the Year, beating out her all-male competitors J. Cole, fun., Gotye and One Direction.

Upon receiving her award, the Mission, B.C. native thanked Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun's label School Boy Records in addition to her legions of fans, who are adorably nicknamed "Jepsies," saying, "To the fans, I am floored…this is amazing. Thank you so, so much."

Bieber also had his fill of acceptance speeches as he picked up three AMAs in the categories of Favorite Album — Pop/Rock for his record "Believe," Favorite Male Artist — Pop/Rock and the biggest award of the evening, Artist of the Year, beating out Drake, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Rihanna.

This is the second time the Canadian boy wonder has taken home all three awards in one night with his first time being in 2010.

"It's hard growing up with everything going on, with everyone watching me," the 18-year-old singer said upon receiving the Artist of the Year award with his "little but beautiful" mother on stage by his side. "I wanted to say that as long as you guys keep believing in me, I want to always make you proud."

The "Boyfriend" hitmaker also took the stage and performed an acoustic and almost melancholy rendition of his tune "As Long As You Love Me" before breaking into his latest track "Beauty and a Beat" featuring female rapper extraordinaire Nicki Minaj.

It's interesting to note that during the performance, Minaj didn't change the lyric "…but I gotta keep my eye out for Selener" to reflect the couple's new relationship status, which looks like it is still up in the air since Gomez and Bieber were seen arriving together at an AMAs after party.
