Madonna reveals she didn’t intend to flash audience at 1984 MTV VMAs

Like a virgin, flashing for the very first time.

We are all familiar with Madonna the artist, who takes risks and pushes boundaries. During her inaugural performance at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards, she came out with a bang when she sang her hit, "Like A Virgin," and flashed a shocked audience. Following the infamous presentation of underpants and garters, the then 26-year-old, began her reputation as an unabashed sex symbol and an unpredictable artist. However, now she is claiming that it was all an accident.

In an interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Madonna said that her flashing incident was a complete accident that occurred while she was trying to retrieve her lost shoe. As she tells the story: "I was standing at the top of a wedding cake, as one does, and I walked down these steps, which were the tiers of a wedding cake. And I lost my shoe. I lost my white stiletto. And I thought, 'Oh god, how am I going to get that? It's over there and I'm on TV.' So I thought well, I'll just pretend I meant to do this and I dove on to the floor and I rolled around and I reached for the shoe. And, as I reached for the shoe, the dress went up. And the underpants were showing and uhm, I didn't mean to." However, as they say in the sports world, let's see that in an instant replay.

As you can see, Madonna does indeed kick off both her shoes in order to climb down the giant wedding cake. She also rolls around in an effort to retrieve them and put them back on to continue her performance. However, what was she trying to find while she was rolling around and gyrating on stage the second time? She was wearing both shoes!

The Queen of Pop's explanation makes sense for the first part of the performance, but in the latter, she clearly meant to roll around and show the audience her undergarments.

The first time "Like A Virgin" was performed, it surprised audiences and made Madonna a household name. In 2003, she performed the song again with special guests Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliot in a spectacle that would renew her status as a groundbreaking artist who knows how to put on a controversial performance.
