Michelle Williams, formerly of Destiny’s Child, gets theatre gig

Last year, former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams was babysitting her fellow girl group member Beyoncé Knowles’ progeny, Blue Ivy.

However, 2013 looks like it could be a big year for the 32-year-old singer. Williams has been tapped to star in the touring musical "Fela!" which opens on Jan. 29 in Washington, D.C.

According to The Associated Press, Williams will take on the role of Sandra Isadore in the Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith-produced musical that centres on the life story of Fela Kuti, an activist who combined “jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies” to create Afrobeat.

Since the disbandment of Destiny’s Child in 2006, Williams has released her third solo album “Unexpected” in 2008, which climbed to No. 42 on Billboard’s 200-album chart and featured two top five tunes on the Dance/Club Songs chart, “The Greatest” and “We Break The Dawn.”

The singer has also taken on multiple theatre and television acting jobs since her time with Knowles and Kelly Rowland in shows such as “The Colour Purple” and “Chicago” and on UPN’s “Half & Half.”

In 2010, Williams left her manager Mathew Knowles (yes, Beyoncé’s father) and last year, announced that she had signed with Light Records.

"I'm so excited about this new venture!” she tweeted in June. “Some people don't know that this will be my THIRD gospel/inspirational album! *shrugs*”
