Swollen Members: Making a Comeback With New Album “Beautiful Death Machine”

With the release of their new album, "Beautiful Death Machine" coming later this year, Prevail, Mad Child and Rob The Viking of Swollen Members talked to Yahoo! Canada Music about returning to their roots, when they lost themselves and where they are today.

"I feel like we've come back to where we started," Prevail said. "When we began recording 'Dagger Mouth,' we basically had a 15-second conversation [along the lines of], 'What are we going to do? Let's go back to what we do best, which is making classic Swollen Members music that's heavy and intense with well-produced beats.'"

The decision to return to the original Swollen Members style was something that came after the band realized that they wanted to just be themselves. Looking back, their third album "Heavy" signified the shift in their artistic direction that sent them on a different path than originally intended.

"'Heavy' came after we had won three Juno Awards three years in a row, six or seven MuchMusic Video Awards, West Coast Awards and we had just gone gold and platinum and life was changing," Mad Child said. "First of all, ['Heavy'] was made in a much shorter period of time [and] you shouldn't rush art. Secondly, I was pushing the concept of us needing hits and I feel partially to blame because I feel like I even started putting pressure on the group saying, 'Let's make more hits, we have to hurry up and pump this out.'"

"Thirdly," Prevail added, "We were also in Los Angeles and signed to Virgin and [although] they were hooking us up with very talented producers, [they] had a much different vision than we did as to what the end goal should be for Swollen Members."

Even though it was a hectic time in the band's career, Prevail felt that it was necessary to get them to where they are today.

"I look back at it retrospectively and I think that when anyone has [had] a long career that it is just going to happen," Prevail said. "I think that you have to go through something like that in order to build. So, we're shelving that whole thing and just sticking with our original game plan."

The band told Yahoo! Canada Music first that a new EP titled "Progressive Aggressive" will be out before their next album, "Beautiful Death Machine," drops later this year. The new tunes will be keeping in step with the genuine Swollen Members sound that fans love and until then, check out "Do or Die" from the band's Juno Award nominated album, "Dagger Mouth," featured below.
