How Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ Became a Smash Hit

Yesterday, Carly Rae Jepsen learned that her infectious pop track "Call Me Maybe" had reached number one on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

According to Billboard, she is "the first lead female artist to send her first Hot 100 entry to No. 1 since Ke$ha" in 2009 and by doing so, interrupted Gotye's eight week reign at the top with "Somebody That I Used to Know."

Upon learning the news, she sent out a slew of thank you tweets from her official twitter account listing one individual in particular who helped her reach the top, Justin Bieber.

Released in September 2011, "Call Me Maybe" was written by Jepsen, her guitarist Tavish Crowe and Marianas Trench frontman, Josh Ramsay.

"It started like any song starts, just sort of a folky tune that I was playing while I was on the road with Tav," Jepsen told Rolling Stone. "The lyrics came very easily. We weren't really over-thinking it. We brought in Josh, and he helped us kind of pop-ify it. He's really good. He's got a little bit of pop genius in his blood. It was written, recorded and produced within four or five days, tops. It was a pretty easy song to write."

However, even though the song may have started just like any other, that doesn't mean that it was an ordinary journey.

Hearing the tune while home for the holidays in December 2011, Bieber took it upon himself to help out Jepsen by tweeting about how "catchy" her song was and subsequently, released a video of him and his famous friends covering the track.

Appearing in the clip along with celebrity friends like his girlfriend Selena Gomez and "High School Musical" star Ashley Tisdale, Bieber's video helped propel Jepsen's track to viral status and more than assisted her in gaining a record deal with Schoolboy Records.

Since then, Jepsen has appeared on major talk shows like "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," in addition to creating an Internet video meme featuring celebrities like Katy Perry and James Franco covering her tune. Not to mention the array of sports teams that have battled it out for the best "Call Me Maybe" cover of all time.

Today, Jepsen is in New York City for a photo shoot and is set to perform at this weekend's MuchMusic Video Awards.

It is safe to say that after seeing her track reach number one, the 26-year-old B.C. native now truly "believes" Bieber's mantra of "Never Say Never" and she will also be joining him when he begins his 47 date "Believe" tour beginning in September of this year.
