Justin Bieber sings to his mother Pattie Mallette on “Today”

In honour of the release of her new memoir "Nowhere But Up," Pattie Mallette was serenaded by her son Justin Bieber while appearing on NBC's "Today" with a song that he wrote for her as a birthday present, "Turn To You."

"She's been like a friend, someone who I could talk to and a good role model," the 18-year-old, who is now the same age as Mallette when she gave birth to him, told Kathie Lee Gifford in the interview.

He also said, "I want to grow up and have the heart that my mom has because she has such a big heart."

Released on Mother's Day, proceeds from the purchase of the track "Turn To You" went to help raise money to save the Bethesda Centre shelter in Ontario which is dedicated to the support of single mothers.

In addition to writing a song for her birthday, the Canadian teen phenomenon also wrote the forward to his mother's book, which details her struggles growing up, being a teen mom and dealing with sexual abuse that she says she was subjected to at a young age.

"I always wanted to write a book about my story," Mallette said. "I wanted to be as vulnerable as I could, so that young girls who have been through similar things could relate. I pretty much bared my soul. It definitely furthered my healing process."

Mallette's memoir also goes into what it was like raising Bieber before his success. It seems like mother and son are now closer more than ever even though they spend a lot of time apart.

CTV News reports Bieber used to look forward to the times when his mother would leave while he was on the road and today really misses her when she's gone.

"I do miss her, yeah, I mean especially now being 18," he said. "Before when I was round her all the time, like, every day, I was getting sick of her and I would look forward to her leaving, like, 'Yes mom's leaving tomorrow!' And now I'm like, 'When is mom coming back?' Because I don't see her that often so you know it's funny how those things change."
