Andrew Huang writes Canada’s first crowd-sourced song for WWF’s Earth Hour

Since 2007, the World Wildlife Fund's (WWF) Earth Hour event has helped increase awareness about our environment and the effects of climate change.

To celebrate this year's Earth Hour, the WWF has enlisted the talents of viral star, Andrew Huang, to compose Canada's first crowd sourced song called, "When The Lights Go Down," as their Team Earth Hour Anthem.

"Crowd sourcing is a fairly new and, for me, a very exciting concept," Huang told Yahoo! Canada Music by telephone. "Basically, you get a whole lot of people involved and get them behind a single idea or project. [In this case,] the crowd sourcing comes in with the lyrics of the song that have been submitted through WWF Canada's Facebook page."

Huang's job was to sort through thousands of lyrical submissions and piece them together to make a complete song. He has used more than 20 entries for the final tune and looked for certain elements to create the perfect track.

"I look for [lyrics] with some kind of emotional resonance," Huang said. "You can tell when someone is really passionate about living sustainably and that comes through in what they write. I think one of my favourite [lyrics] was by someone who wrote something along the lines of, 'When the lights go down we can party in the dark.'"

Huang says that the track is a mid-tempo anthem that aims to celebrate Earth Hour and generate excitement about sustainability. By listening to the song, he hopes to, "Enable people to believe in the difference that they can make."
